What Is Wellness?

The term "Wellness" is coming to be common knowledge in the corporate world, as corporations shift towards improving the health of their employee populations. Yet the question remains as to what does wellness mean?

Wellness - is generally used to mean a healthy balance of the mind, body,  and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being. Wellness is a view of health that emphasizes the state of the entire being and its ongoing development. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellness_(alternative_medicine).

As employees grow and develop, they continue to deal with many aspects of life that affect their health and well-being. Often times it becomes difficult  While it is clear the side effects of poor health are costly, it is not always clear that the side effects to poor well-being are even more costly.  Employees that are not feeling "well" are often unproductive and this ends up costing a company more than the bill for their health condition. This condition is known as presenteeism and all employees in a company are susceptible to it.  For more information in presenteeism click here.

It is for this reason that more and more corporations are implementing wellness programs. If a company is able to not just stem off sickness, but help their employees reach a whole new level of overall wellness, this improves the entire back bone of the company. For if employees are healthy and feel good they are more productive improving the bottom line.  Companies are seeing that the pennies they invest in prevention save them thousand of dollars spent on disease.
